A Sableye Study

The Darkness Pokemon

This species thrives in deep natural caves within the earth.  It may also be found in mining tunnels due to an obvious abundance of minerals and precious metals which form the bulk of its diet.

Being partially of the Ghost classification, it stands to reason that it has no physical need for constant sustenance.  But research indicates that Sableye's characteristic gemstone-shaped eyes, while extremely keen, require daily maintenance in the form of consumed minerals to keep vision crisp.  Thus, the pokèmon experiences "hunger" as a reminder on the upkeep of it's eyes.  When denied, it experiences visual disturbances or hallucinations.  These progress in intensity until the hunger is sated, else the pokèmon begins to slowly go blind. In this state, it becomes more difficult to obtain food, or even to navigate new territory.

Stories of frenzied Sableye attacks are now attributed to this condition, wheras before, travelers lore said it to be the true nature of this species.  It was often a fatal encounter for the pokèmon.
Now, travellers and trainers alike are advised to carry a small quantity of cheap minerals on hand to ward off such an attack, should it occur.  One may opt to capture the specimen for recovery in a pokèmon center, but this is more difficult due to the unnatural strength gained in this frenzy.
